I don't know many people who can say they know someone who is 100 years old but I can! Grandma Morwood turned 100 years old on September 22 and we had a big celebratory party for her. There was no way we were missing her birthday so we travelled down to St. George for the fun.
As part of her birthday, all of her family got together for a massive family picture. We filled the bleachers at the Snow Canyon High School gym and we were all so happy to be together.
I know the picture is terrible but, in order to get everyone in, I had to take a panoramic shot. I am sure the actual photograph Roy took will be much better. I really don't know how many people were there for the picture but somewhere close to 185!! I think we were only missing maybe 10 people which is amazing.
This is a picture of just my family. There are a lot of us and then just multiply that by my dad's 7 other siblings, and there are a lot of people. A lot of posterity from just one amazing woman! Here is also a picture of Grandma and all of her kids.
This was a busy day for Grandma. Before the pictures, there was an open house for all of Grandma's friends, neighbors, and extended family. It was fun to see all of her friends and some of our old neighbors from when we lived next door to Grandma. She also had a great time seeing friends she hadn't seen in a while.
After the pictures, the immediate family gathered back at Janet's house for our annual birthday party and dinner. There were so many people! It was so great to be with everyone and chat and catch up.
You could tell Grandma was getting tired but still wanted to be around everyone. She absolutely loves her family and was so happy being with everyone. She especially loves the little grandkids.
The night was full of entertainment as each family showed off their talents with songs and other things. Don Lynn's family did a really funny song called "Count Your Many Wrinkles." Some others sang songs as well. Our family sang the primary song, "Grandma." Then at the end, Stephanie made all the grandkids (meaning my generation) come up and sing, "Grandma's Mulberry Tree." Apparently this song was written and sung at Grandpa and Grandma's 50th wedding anniversary so Stephanie wanted to bring it back. Well it didn't go over too well because none of us knew the words or the tune because the 50th wedding anniversary was like 30 years ago. Definitely before my time. Oh well, we ended up just reading the words and it was actually quite a funny song and we all had a good laugh as we stood up there in front of everyone looking like fools. It was great.
As part of the decorations, there were a few display tables of things about Grandma. The really cool one was the tree Crystal made. This huge tree had a picture of Grandma and Grandpa on the trunk and then pictures of all of us on the leaves of the tree. It was pretty amazing to see all of the leaves and how full the tree was. The saying is definitely true that all this happened "all because two people fell in love." We also watched a slide show of pictures of Grandma throughout the years. The cool thing about it though was that it was Grandma's voice narrating the show. She was telling stories of her childhood and explaining the pictures. It was so cool. I really hope we get a copy of that slide show just so we will always have Grandma's voice along with her stories.
Finally this wonderful announcement was posted in the newspaper. Grandma was also on the 10 o'clock news! Stephanie's husband works for ABC so he was able to pull some strings and get Grandma's story on the news and we were all able to watch it together. It was pretty cool.
We sure love our Grandma and hope to have her around for 100 more years. She might disagree but we want her to stick around forever! The awesome thing about it though is that she is really in excellent health for her age. She still gets around independently, she live alone and even still drives to church and Lin's. She does get tired more easily now she says but really she could live for another 20 years at least! We love you Grandma! Happy Birthday!
