Day 4 of our cruise was spent in Mazatlan, Mexico. We were not sure of what to do in Mazatlan because we heard the beaches were not the best. So instead of heading to the beach, we decided to hike to the lighthouse or El Faro Mazatlan.
This was a good hike up to the lighthouse. The hike was only about a mile long but it was straight uphill and switchbacks. The part that was hard though was that it was hot. We were definitely not used to the heat but we did it!
As we hiked up the hill, we could see different views of the ocean. The lighthouse is out on this peninsula. So we had a full view of the ocean.
We finally made it to the top of the hill and could see the lighthouse.
We were definitely sweaty by the time we got up there but the view was worth it. From the top, we could see the whole city of Mazatlan as well as an all around view of the ocean. It was pretty cool. On the way to the top and at the top, we met a bunch of people that were so friendly. Everyone we passed were very encouraging and told us to keep going. We also met quite a few people from Utah and even some from Hyrum! It was pretty funny to meet someone from our hometown so far away from home.
On the top of the hill near the lighthouse was this glass bridge lookout we could walk out on.
It was kind of nerve racking because there was nothing under us except rocks and trees and water. When we walked on the glass, we had to take off our shoes and wear blue booties. We could see everything from on this lookout. These white rocks out in the ocean are known as the icebergs of Mexico. They are actually just rock that are died white from so much bird poop! Okay I don't know if that is true but that's what someone told us.
We loved being on this lookout and seeing everything. After hanging out on top of the mountain for a while, we decided to head back to the port.
This is another lookout point on the trail as we walked down.
When we got back to the port, we decided to do a little shopping at the flea market. We also walked around the port area and listened to Mariachi bands, and other Mexican performers. They were really good. Our family just stayed close to the port while the others decided to do a little tour of the town.
Here they are having a great time with their Mexican guide, their Cokes, and their big hats.
The flea market was kind of fun for the kids to experience. We told them to hide their money, think about what they thought was a good price, and then stick to their guns. Emily and Colby got to be pretty good negotiators. Emily was able to get a nice leather bag, and the boys negotiated a good price for some spinning top toys. Then Charlotte found some little maracas and really wanted them. The lady selling them would not budge on the price at all and Charlotte would not put the maracas down so we could leave. We ended up paying way too much for those things. Oh well she loved them.
After bartering, we headed back to the ship for lunch and some fun on the ship. All the kids wanted to to was go swimming so that they could cool down.
That night at the dining, the kids had a good time with the folded napkins. When they saw them on the plates, they thought they looked like hats so they decided to put them on. We also saw this cool ice sculpture at the buffet. We were amazed at this. After our daily dose of fun at the Princess Live! theater and the Kids Discovery area, we headed to the cookies and ice cream before bed.
This was another fun day in Mexico!
