March 2024

March was a lot of fun; full of hanging out with cousins, birthday parties, school activities, and Easter.

Brooklyn is very social right now and loves playing with other kids her age.  She especially loves hanging out with Mavis.
While Russell and I went to the temple one day, Brooklyn and Mavis got to play together at Tyler and Ashley's house.  These two love playing dress up.  This day they were a Barbie Butterfly Princess and a Pretty Peacock Princess.  These two can think of so many fun things to do together.
On the way home, we stopped at Pepperidge Farm to see what they had and we found a giant Goldfish!

We celebrated Colby's 13th birthday on March 4.  I know, he is getting old.
He had a fun party with his friends. They played dodge ball and basketball and just had a good time being crazy boys.

The elementary school put on a couple of activity nights this month.  The first one was STEM Night.  The boys love going to this every year.  Even though Colby is out of elementary school, he still likes to go and see all of the science and engineering things.  Here we are building a bridge out of cookies.  Ours was pretty sturdy and held up all of our milk cartons.

The next school activity was Literacy Night.  For the past month the kids have been participating in the One Book One School program where the entire school reads the same book and talks about it throughout the month.  This year we read the book, "The Fourteenth Goldfish."  It was about an 11 year old girl who's grandpa discovered this crazy DNA in jellyfish that makes you younger.  The grandpa injected some of the DNA into himself and was able to make himself 13 again.  Throughout the story the girl and her now 13 year old grandpa are trying to get back into his lab to get the rest of his research before his colleagues steal or destroy it.  It was a pretty good book about the what ifs of science. It brings up the point that you should enjoy the life you have instead of constantly wishing we were younger or different.  I don't really know why it was called "The Fourteenth Goldfish" but it was a cute story.  Anyway, during Literacy Night we got to do some activities about the book as well as some other fun literary activities.  One thing the kids did was adopt their own pet goldfish.  (Thankfully they were fake!)

On March 17, St. Patrick's Day, Krispy Kreme was giving out free green donuts if you came in wearing green.  Of course we had to go!
And we did go... Twice!  First the boys and I went in the morning after their piano performance.  Then we also realized that Krispy Kreme also gave out free donuts for A's.  We went home and got everyone in their green clothes and grabbed Colby and Emily's grades and headed back to Krispy Kreme for more donuts.  We were able to get six free green donuts for wearing green and then ten free donuts for all of their A grades!  We made a killing on the Free Green Krispy Kremes!

These kids are so talented in music!  The boys participated in the AIM program this last month and really did great.  They were tested in technique, theory, sight reading, ear training, and performance.  Each of them scored in the high 90's.  The end of season AIM recital was this month and they all did a terrific job on their pieces.  Emily did not do AIM this year but she has still been working hard and performed a song at the recital along with the boys.

The kids are also loving band.  Emily loves playing in the percussion section.  She is performing on the drum set, keyboards, and other percussion instruments in the next concert.  Colby has really enjoyed learning to play the trombone and has excelled at it.  He has now decided to learn the Tuba!  This tuba is as big as he is but he is learning how to play it really quickly. His band teacher said he is really impressed with how effortlessly Colby has learned each of the instruments and how nice it is to finally have a tuba player in the band.  It is really noisy when he practices at home but it is what it is.  Logan is not in band yet but he was able to pick up the trombone and try out a few notes.  I don't know if he will decide to take band or choir but he said he wants to play either the trumpet or trombone if he does band.  We will see next year.

Easter was early this year and landed on the last weekend of March.  As part of the Hyrum Youth Council, Emily was able to help with the City Easter Egg Hunt by setting up, filling and scattering the eggs.  When we got up that morning, it was raining... It was up in the air whether the egg hunt would happen or not but the Youth Council decided to go for it and set everything up in the drizzle.
When we got there for the Hunt, it wasn't raining anymore but the grass and everything was pretty wet.  On the bright side, it was not snowing!  Charlotte and Brooklyn loved seeing the Easter Bunny and gathering eggs.  They got so many eggs they were able to fill their baskets.  There were not as many people there this year because of the rain so they kids that did come got a ton of stuff.  This was Logan's last year to participate so he was happy to be there too.

After cleaning up the park and warming up a bit, we hit the road heading for St. George.  It was the start of our Spring Break so we were excited to go south for some warmer weather.
On the way we stopped in Beaver for gas and sat on the famous giant rocking chair.

We arrived at Grandma and Grandpa Morwood's house just in time to dye Easter Eggs.

We kind of ran out of time to dye eggs at home but we thought this would be a great activity to do with Grandma and Grandpa.  They don't even dye eggs anymore so we had to bring back the tradition.  The eggs turned out really cool in all of the different colors.  Some may have broken in the dying process but that's just fine.

The next day was Easter Sunday.  After church everyone came over for dinner and an Easter Egg Hunt.  It was raining so we ended up having the hunt down in the garage.  There was so much candy that there was no "hiding" the eggs.  It as all just scattered on the ground.  The Easter Egg Hunt was still fun though and we all had way too much candy.  All of adults hiding the candy and eggs got first pick of the good stuff because we had to be "quality control." All of the Reeses, Cadbury, and Peanut Butter M&M's looked suspicious so we had to 'inspect' them.  It turned out they were just fine but you can never be too cautious ha ha!

It was so nice to get together with everyone.  I think almost everyone was there for dinner so we had a house full.  The kids love being with their cousins.  Happy Easter!
March has been a good month and we are excited that the snow is starting to melt and Spring is hopefully just around the corner!
