First Pack Meeting

So Russell just got called to be the new Cub Master in our ward.  (I may or may not have had anything to do with that!)  So far he has really enjoyed the calling and has a ton of fun ideas to make scouts fun for the boys.  Because we don't have very many boys in our ward, we combine with another ward for scouts and the cub masters take turns being in charge of pack meeting.  July's pack meeting was Russell's first pack meeting to be in charge of.  July's theme just happened to be "Fire Safety".  What more fitting topic could there be for Russell?  He was excited to talk to the boys about fire.
First, Russell brought in all of his fire gear to show the boys.  He even had Kason Webb model on his fire turn outs!  The boys loved it.  Russell also showed the scouts some of the tools firefighters use to put out fires.  He talked about what to do if you are on fire, are in a fire, and how to prevent fires from starting.  Next we played a relay game using different fire moves.

First they had to roll a boy up in a blanket and roll him across the gym.  This symbolized what to do if your clothes catch on fire. (Stop, Drop, and Roll.)  Then they had to crawl back across the gym blindfolded.  This symbolized what to do if you are in a fire in your house and you are trying to get out.  (Crawling under the dark smoke.)  Finally the group had to carry one member across the finish line in the fireman carry.  First one done was the winning team.  The boys had fun with this too.  The best part came next though.  Treats and water:

Russell invited the Fire Department to come over with their firetruck and talk to the boys.  Afterward they sprayed everyone with the master stream hose!  Everyone was soaking wet and loving it!  I think it was a great pack meeting and it seemed like all of the scouts had a good time too.  So Russell is having fun with this calling and I think he will be really good for the boys in cub scouts.

Shriner's, Camping, and a Goober-mobile Equals One Long, Expensive Weekend!

So Pioneer Day/Weekend was pretty eventful for us this year. Here is the story:

First, July 21, we were walking into church and Russell stopped to hold the door open for Grandma Morwood while I had the kids follow me into the foyer.  Next thing I know, I look back and the door and I see Grandma trip on the outside rug and fall straight down hitting her hip on the door frame.  Russell was holding Logan so he couldn't react fast enough to try and catch her.  I felt so bad and we were so worried that she had broken her hip again.  Russell was able to get her up and walk her inside so we knew she hadn't broken anything luckily.  Grandma was pretty shaken up obviously and was feeling really dizzy so Russell had one our missionaries help him take her out to her car and Russell took her home.  She was pretty upset saying stuff like "I can't even go to church anymore!"  But by the time she had rested, she was feeling less dizzy and upset.  Come to find out she just bruised her hip and sprained her foot in the fall.  We are little worried and I think Grandma is too because this is her third fall in the year or so.

Then, July 23, Russell is in the shower listening to his pager and he hears his grandma Farnsworth's address come across as a 17 Delta.  This means a fall victim get there now!  (What is with our Grandma's and falling!) He yells at me to get the kids in the car.  Logan and I were taking our afternoon nap at the time so I was half asleep when he yells at me and Emily and Colby were playing somewhere.  So Russell rushes into the front room grabbing kids and shoes and I am still waking up wondering what the heck was going on.  Finally Russell tells me Grandma Farnsworth had fallen and there was a lot of blood and we needed to leave now so that we could go get her.  So we rushed to the car and Russell was on the phone with dispatch and the fire fighters telling them how to get in the house and calling Traci to tell her to get to Gramdma's right now.  Finally we all calmed down and drove to the ER where we met Russell's parents and Kathleen and Robert.  After getting Grandma Farnsworth cleaned up, the doctors did a few tests and MRI and found a small head bleed.  They were just going to observe her overnight but for various reasons, the doctor decided it would be best if they LifeFlighted her to IMC in Murray where a specialist could observe her recovery.  So we were all worried but we knew she would be in good hands because Jen and Wendy were up there to meet her.  After observing her for a couple days, she was able to go home on Saturday the 27th.

So after leaving the ER, we went home and got everything ready to go camping the next day.  The next morning (24th), we hooked on to the trailer and drove to Washington to see the Warrior Parade.  This parade was awesome and we even got to meet an apostle.  After the parade, we made our way up to Fish Lake.  This year we camped on the Gooseberry side of Fish Lake at Cold Springs.  This was an awesome camp spot and one I hope we can get to again.  We dropped off the trailer and visited with Terral for a while before loading back into the truck to continue our trip up to Salt Lake.  We arrived at Jen and Rick's place just in time to see the city's fireworks from their balcony.  We spent the night at their house.

The next morning (25th), we took Colby to his doctor's appointment at Shriner's Hospital.  Emily stayed and played with her cousins.  This hospital was awesome!  We held pagers in the waiting room that buzzed when it was our turn to go back!  There were also fun things for the kids to do because it is a children's hospital.  First we took a picture with The Chipmunks: Alvin, Simon, and Theodore:

Then Colby watched all of the colorful fish in the tanks.  They even gave Colby a new toy car and he was won over.  When it was our turn to go back, everyone was so friendly.  Dr. Hensey examined Colby's feet and the way he walked and then sent us over to get x-rays.  Colby was having fun being a silly 2 year old the whole time.  I couldn't stop laughing at him.  Once she got the x-rays, the Doctor was able to tell us what was going on with Colby's feet.  She told us he has oblique talus, which is a bit worse that flat footed.  The heel bone on his feet are horizontal rather than tilted up to form an arch.  This is causing the talus bone next to it to be completely out of place too.  In order to fix this, the doctor suggested a surgery that would require Colby to be in full leg casts for 6 weeks.  But even then, it seemed like there was no guarantee that it would fix it.  So we got the file of the x-rays and they told us we could decide what we want to do about this condition.  Dr. Hensey gave us a few things to look up to get a better idea about what this condition is like and what can be done to fix it.  We have an appointment with a doctor down here, too, for a second opinion.  After that, hopefully we will be able to decide what to do.

After Colby's appointment at Shriner's, we drove back to Jen's place to pick up Emily.  Then we drove to IMC in Murray to see how Grandma Farnsworth was doing.  Her head bleed was doing much better and the doctors were planning on releasing her on that Saturday.  That was great news and we were glad she was doing much better.

We decided we better get back on the road if we were going to make it back to camp before it got dark so we could make dinner.  On the way down, we had to stop at our traditional place in Orem, Krispy Kreme!  As we got off the freeway, and drove up to Krispy Kreme, we noticed a car we liked at one of the car dealerships.  We decided to take a look at it just for fun.  We stopped at Ken Garff Nissan in Orem and looked at a Trailblazer they had on their lot.  It had a ton of miles so we decided it wasn't for us.  As we turned to get back in the truck, we noticed a black Honda Odyssey van and decided to check it out too.  It was really nice on the outside and the miles were really low for the age of the car so we decided to ask the salesman how much it was.  Come to find out it was right in our price range!  We have been looking for a van or SUV or crossover ever since we had Logan.  It has been hard getting car seats in and out of the truck and we were just putting too many miles on the truck and with gas prices it was killing us.  So we decided to take this van for a test drive and we were sold!  Long story short, our little Krispy Kreme detour turned into buying a new vehicle!  Pretty expensive doughnuts huh!

Needless to say, we didn't get back to camp until around midnight or 1 am!  We were tired but restless because we now had a car payment...  We have not had a car payment for probably 5 years!  Oh well the next morning (26th) we didn't worry about anything we just had a good time camping.  We spent the day together as a family four-wheeling, fishing and hiking.  We first went fishing at Cold Springs. We didn't catch anything but it was soooooo nice to just sit in the shade and relax and enjoy the scenery.  I told Russell that if we didn't have to work, it would be so nice to just live in the mountains and be mountain men!  I could definitely do without technology for the rest of my life and just enjoy nature!  (that is I guess until the winter and it snows!) Anyway, after fishing, we took a little four-wheeler ride along the little trails around our camp.  Yes, all five of us can fit on our 4-wheeler!  Logan loved riding, he liked looking around at the trees and sunshine.  And of course Emily and Colby had a blast too!  We stopped at Twin Ponds and took a little hike to the ponds.

The kids loved running down the trail enjoying the beautiful surroundings.  They pointed out every flower, rock, bug, and stick along the trail.  Emily even found a HUGE dandelion to blow!  (I don't really think it was a dandelion, but that is what it looked like!)

After hiking for a while, the kids got tired and wanted a ride:

We finally made it to the pond.  Don't you just love all of the green everywhere!  I think this place is so beautiful.  Like I said before, if I could I would live in the mountains all summer.  So after enjoying this place, we headed back up the trail to the 4-wheeler and then back to camp.  That night, we had a campfire with the Hughes and the Pryor's and cooked Woofers.  Woofer cookers are roasting sticks with a wooden ball at the end of it.  To make a Woofer, you spread a Pillsbury biscuit over the ball and cook the biscuit over the fire.  Once the biscuit is cooked, you take it off the ball and fill it with pudding or pie filling and whipped cream and you have a little pie or a Woofer!  They were so good.  We also cooked S'mores and had a good time around the fire.

We had to cut our camping trip a little short because we needed to go back up to Orem to pick up our new van.  We left camp around 8 in the morning and as we were getting in the truck, I noticed this big beehive a few feet away from our trailer:
I kept wondering why we had so many bees in our camp and I guess I found out why.  The beehive was pretty cool to look at though.

So this is where our vacation gets pretty ridiculous.  We bought our van on Thursday and we told the dealer that we would be back on Saturday morning to pick it up so they had all day Friday to get everything ready for us to drive it home.  When we bought the car, they agreed to detail the inside, fix a couple of plastic panels under the car, get a spare key, and a couple other things.  Well when we got to the dealership Saturday morning, none of those things had been done.  They had not even gotten it safety inspected or the temporary tags ready!  We were so mad we were about to say never mind on the car.  We had to be on the road by noon because I had to be home to go to a baptism at 5 so we were trying to push them along to get all of this stuff done.  I still don't know what the hold up was on Friday and why it took so long on Saturday.  Another very long story short, we were very upset with the service we received at Ken Garff, I missed the baptism (luckily my counselor was able to go and take charge), and they didn't even put gas in our new car!  Grrrr!  But on the plus side, we really like our new van and the kids love the new van and tell everyone they see about it:

Ain't she a beauty?!  We call her Black Pearly.  When we finally got on the road, I got to drive Black Pearly home while Russell drove the truck and trailer.  We asked the kids where they wanted to ride and they all said, "In the new van!!"  Pearly drove so nicely and smoothly down the freeway and got pretty good gas mileage about 25 mpg!  We drove in good weather until we got to Fillmore then the rain started coming down.  And I mean coming down!  It rained in sheets and sheets.  We drove with the windshield wipers going super fast and we still had a hard time seeing more than just the car in front of us.  We drove about 50 mph the whole way.  Finally the pouring rain finally let up as we got the about Toquerville.  Then after that, it was bright and sunny like it hadn't rained at all!  So weird.  (See the sunny skies in the pictures above)  So I guess in a way, having the car delayed was a blessing in disguise.  If we would have gotten the van on time and left at noon like we had planned, we would have been in a hurry to get home for the baptism.  But since we didn't have to hurry home to anything, we were able to slow down and drive safely in the rain.  I guess there is always a positive way to look at things and Heavenly Father has His hand in everything whether we want to see it or not.  We were very blessed to get this van and it seemed everything fell into place to get it on Thursday.  It is so nice to get kids in and out of.  So now we are the drivers of a goober mobile!  Our coolness level just went down a few notches because we now drive a mini-van!!!! (sfx: woman screaming!).  Good thing we like it and hey it even has leather seats, heated seats (not that we need it in St. George), a back up camera, and huge trunk space.  (Love the trunk space!!)

This weekend was quite long and quite expensive but quite exciting and spontaneous too.

Warrior Parade

As part of the 24th of July Pioneer Day celebration, Washington City put on a big parade.  The parade had all of the typical parade entries like princesses, dignitaries, and Primary kids but it was the end of the parade that brought most of the people out to see it.  The parade was called The Warrior Parade because at the end, the 2,000 Stripling Warriors marched through.  They were lead by Captain Moroni and his Title of Liberty:
Then Helaman lead his band of 2,000 sons:

It was really cool to watch these boys march through dressed as the Stripling Warriors would have been.  When they were planning this event they invited all boys 12 - 18 years old to participate because that is the age we believe the stripling warriors would have been.  As they marched, Helaman lead them in various war chants.  With the drums and horns, the chants were quite powerful.  Even though she is a girl, Jacee was able to march with the warriors and play one of the drums.  She said it was awesome.  You can see her in the picture with Helaman; she is the first drummer on the left.  Jared, Jacob, and Braden were also in the parade as warriors.
Along with the 2,000 Stripling Warriors, were the modern day warriors.  The Boy Scouts marched to commemorate 100 years of Scouting.  All of the missionaries in the St. George, Utah mission also marched in the parade.  They sang powerful hymns and they walked that expressed their mission theme and purpose.  It was awesome to see.

And to top it off a modern day prophet was also in the parade:
Elder Jeffery R Holland and his wife were in the parade.  This alone was way awesome to see and experience.

My mom and I ran to the end of the parade to get some more pictures of the Warriors and Helaman.  Jacee, Jared, Jacob, and Braden all said marching in the parade and being a part of this experience was amazing.  They also said they had a blast preparing for it.

At the end of the parade, we saw Elder Holland drive by in his carriage so we decided to follow him in hopes of getting a picture with him.  We walked about three blocks to Staheli Cotton Town Village to get to him.  When we got there, the body guards said we could shake his hand but we couldn't pose for pictures.  So we asked if we could take some pictures while he shook our hands and they said yes.  When Elder Holland arrived, he said, "Oh do you want some pictures? Of course you can get pictures."  He is the one that posed us and let us take some pictures with him:

It was so cool to see an Apostle of the Lord that close and shake his hand.  He was so nice and friendly.  As Elder Holland was talking to my mom, we found out that his family and my mom's family used to be in the same ward and my grandpa Burgess taught Sister Holland in 5th grade!  Small world huh!  I was wishing I had brought Emily and Colby with me so that they could meet the Apostle too.  At the time we ran to the end of the parade, I didn't know we were going to meet him so I left Emily and Colby with Russell and I walked down with my mom.  I am also kicking myself for not getting Logan out of the stroller for a picture with Elder Holland but he was asleep and originally they told us we couldn't get pictures.  So bummer I don't have any pictures with my kids but I did get some with these kids.

As we walked back to Lacie's house, we were all on cloud nine because we had just talked to an Apostle!  This was a really fun parade and a good experience for us all.

Happy Birthday to Daddy

Russell celebrated his 30th birthday this year!  Man, I married an old man!  For his birthday I gave him a bouquet of Dum-Dum suckers with a sign that said, "30 Sucks!"  We all had a good laugh at that.

Russell also got a new MP3 player so he can listen to music when he works out or is working in the yard.  The last one we had died in a watery grave.  Just so you know MP3 players do not survive washing machines...  Any way Russell also got a fun card from the kids with a big sticker badge that said "Ask me about my awesome kids!"  He wore it with pride all day.

For his birthday we went camping at Pine Valley with our ward and friends.  When we came home from Pine Valley, we invited the Farnsworth's over for cake.  Originally it was just going to be Russell's parents and brother and sister but then we got a call from his mom asking if it was okay if Ron, Kathleen, Robert, and Grandma Farnsworth come over too.  We said yes. Then we got another call to see if Wendy's family and Ryan's family could come too.  They were in town for the Pioneer Day celebration in Panaca.  We said the more the merrier but they will just get  a smaller piece of cake!  So we had the almost the whole Farnsworth clan at our house to celebrate the big 3.0. birthday!

We had cake, ice cream, and watermelon.  Emily and Colby decided that watermelon was their favorite food and they sure can eat a lot of it!  The kids were so excited to meet new cousins and have them play at their house.  We had a lot of fun visiting and catching up with Ron and Kathleen's side of the family.  (PS I don't know why Russell is throwing Kelton in the garbage but he said it was really funny.)

The next day (Sunday), we went over to the Farnsworth's for dinner with the whole clan again.  All I can say is there is never a dull moment when the Farnsworth family gets together.

We had fun playing with all of our "new" cousins.  We discovered that Logan's new favorite toys are paper plates and newspaper!  He loved playing with those things.  The plate alone kept him entertained while we ate dinner and dessert.  Russell and Tyler always have fun together but you don't want to come between them while they are rough housing.  Aunt Kathleen found that out the hard way.  As you can see she was caught in the double bear hug!  Emily and Colby loved playing with Wendy's kids.  Jaycee helped Colby fly like a superhero while Tyler helped Emily fly.

And of course, it would not me a Farnsworth get together if there was not some sort of wrestling match!

Tyler made the mistake of challenging Russell to a wrestling match.  As you can see, the 30 year old won the almost 17 year old!  And to top it off, Tyler got a wedgie and a fart in the face!  Yes!  After that everyone else went at it.  Poor Jaycee got the brunt. Being the only girl cousin (besides Emily), she kind of got ganged up on by the boys.  Luckily, most of them were her brothers so she pretty much held her own.  As the grand finale of the evenings events, the cousins created a human pyramid.  What a fun, crazy night!  Thank you Wendy for taking all of these fun pictures so we could remember the craziness.

Happy Birthday, Daddy!

Pine Valley Outing

Our ward has a ward party up in Pine Valley every year.  This year we decided to camp overnight with some our friends in the ward as well.  We headed up to Pine Valley on Friday afternoon.  Our friends were giving us a hard time because we took our camp trailer but I didn't care.  I just told them that I don't tent camp.  They were all wishing they had a trailer because it started sprinkling rain a little bit and the sky looked really bad.  Luckily though, it only sprinkled and the sky cleared up by nightfall.  We shared a campsite with Chris and Tara Stanley and Emily and Colby had a blast playing with their daughters Rylie and Hayden.  We also camped with Brady and Anna White and Bret and Lori Olsen.  All of the kids had so much fun playing together.

After we set up camp, Russell made a peach cobbler to take to the ward party.  When it was done, we headed up to the group site for yummy dutch oven dinner with our ward.  We love our ward and always have a lot of fun at the ward activities.  While at the party, a couple of the little Sunbeams came up to me and shyly said "Hi, Teacher!"  It totally made my day!  I love it when the primary kids recognize me outside of church and say hi to me.  It makes me feel like I am doing something right in this calling.

Because it was Russell's birthday, some of the ward members sang Happy Birthday to him.  Brother Thompson even gave him one of his way good cinnamon rolls.  That made Russell's day.  When the party was over, we headed back to camp and cooked S'mores with the Olsen's and the Stanley's.  Instead of marshmallows, we used leftover Peeps from Easter.  They were actually really good!  After a fun game of Cinderella Uno, we all hit the sack for the night.

The next morning we all came together and made a huge pot luck camp breakfast of pancakes, eggs, hash browns and sausage. It was so good.  While we cleaned up camp, all the kids had fun playing hide and seek, tag, and I spy.

It was really quiet for a while so all of us adults stopped and wondered what happened to the kids.  Then we found them playing hide and seek in this large pipe under the road!  They thought it was a cool tunnel and were crawling through the pipe to the other side of the road.  What a cool discovery, right?  Well we took some pictures and then told them to stay out of the tunnel.

Then the kids started playing king of the rock except it was "Princess" of the rock because they were princesses (and Prince Colby!).  This is a picture of Colby, Rylie Stanley, Faye Olsen, and Emily.  They had a blast playing together.

Once camp was cleaned up, we took a hike down to the lake to go fishing.  The White boys said they had never been fishing before so we let them practice with our poles.  In the above picture is Colby, AJ and Noble White, Russell, Eva and Brady White, and Emily.

Colby loves going fishing and is really good at casting his pole out in the water and then reeling it in. Emily also likes to fish with her pink pole.  She liked fishing with her friends and shared her pole with Faye.  Russell was busy casting poles, fixing lines and teaching kids how to fish.  He let AJ and Noble use his pole.  The boys were kind of upset that we didn't catch any fish...

Below is a picture of the tree that was just over our head.  As you can see, the tree was full of bobbers, and lures, and fishing line and hooks.  I guess a lot of fishermen before us had cast their line a little too high and got their lines stuck in the tree!  We couldn't help but laugh at it.  There had to have been 20 or more lines stuck in that tree!

Well we finally did catch one little fish.  AJ was reeling in Russell's pole and it looked like it had a big snag so Russell went to get it unstuck. While he was reeling it in, Russell realized it was actually a fish not a snag!  When he got it to shore, we decided it was too small to keep and tried to let it go.  Unfortunately the fish wouldn't swim away and was acting dead.  It would swim a little but then go belly up.  We tried everything to get it to swim but it wanted to die.  The White boys were wondering what the inside of a fish looked like so Russell gave them a little anatomy lesson as he gutted the fish.  They were so amazed and thought it was so cool.  While dissecting the fish, Russell cut open the stomach to show the boys what the fish had eaten and inside the fish's stomach was two plastic worms!  No wonder the fish wanted to die, it couldn't digest the plastic worms.  We decided to bury the fish instead of eat it because we didn't know what else was wrong with it.

When we were all fished out, we headed back to our camp, hooked up to the trailer and headed back home to the heat.  We had a fun time with our friends.

Let's Go Fly a Kite

Every since we saw Mary Poppins, Emily has been asking me if we can go fly our kites.  I always said maybe later.   Last year I put the kites away and kind of forgot about them.  The kids forgot about them too until we got out the inflatable pool and found the kites with it.  Then both Emily and Colby kept begging us to go fly their kites now that they had one.  They would even try to fly them in the house by running down the hall but of course that never worked.  Well later finally came and I took the kids to the park to fly their kites.
Being summer in St. George it was really hot so we took a lot of breaks in the shade.  The kids had a blast though and didn't want to stop for very long.  For some reason Colby's turtle kite didn't come with string (yeah I know who sells a kite with no string...or who buys a kite with no string?).  So we had to share Emily's spool of string to fly Colby's kite.  This was nice because while one kid was flying their kite, the other one could sit in the shade and watch and rest.

There wasn't a lot of wind that day but that didn't stop us.  The Shadow Mountain park has a steep grass hill leading into an open grass field.  To fly our kites, the kids would run down the hill as fast as they could and I would throw the kite in the air and then we got to watch the kite fly.  As long as the kids continued to run, the kites would fly.  Unfortunately, when they stopped running, the kites fell and it was time to start over or rest in the shade.  Flying our kites was actually really fun.  I don't know why I put it off for so long.  We need to do it again soon.  After being in the heat for a while, Logan was done and wanted to go home.  Emily and Colby did not want to go at all.  I had to bribe them with a trip to Grandma's in order to get them in the car.  Crazy kids! What a fun day we had!

Happy Birthday to Mommy

Russell had told the kids that it was my birthday on Friday so they were so excited.  Everyday they kept asking me if it was Friday yet; they could not wait!

I went to work on the morning of my birthday which is the first time I think I have ever worked on my birthday.  Luckily I only work until noon.  While I was at work, Russell had these way pretty flowers delivered to my office:
The picture does not do them justice but they were very pretty.  The flowers totally made my day!  When I got home, Emily was so excited to see the flowers and asked me where I got them.  I told her dad gave them to me.  She wondered how Dad had given them to me when he was at home.  Russell told her he was magic.  Then both Colby and Emily sang "Happy Birthday to Momma!"  It was so dang cute.  When Russell asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday I told him I didn't care.  Then Emily pipped in, "Let's go to the Splash Pad and the Carousel!"  Then Colby joined her "Yeah the Plash Pad!"  So the splash pad it was.  After naps we headed to the St. George Town Square for some fun in the sun!
First we rode on the Carousel.  As a reading reward from the library, Emily and Colby got free Carousel tickets.  Luckily, they are short enough that they ride for free anyway so Russell and I used the tickets and our whole family got to ride for free.  It was so much fun to see the smiles on their faces.  We pretended we were riding the Carousel horses in Mary Poppins and could jump really high.

And, of course, next we headed for the splash pad.

This was also very fun!  Emily and Colby were just like fish lounging in the lazy river.  They loved splashing each other as well as me.  Logan liked the water too.  He kicked his little feet and splashed around.  Emily liked to pretend she was a mermaid like Ariel.  Colby loved jumping as high as he could and landing in the water making a big splash.  After playing for quite a while, it was time to dry off and go get something to eat.
We decided to go to Pizza Factory for dinner.  When we got to our table Emily told the waitress it was my birthday.  Because of this, we got a free birthday pizza!  Thanks Emily!  Here is my cool 28th birthday pizza.  To top it off we got the amazingly good Pizza Factory bread sticks and our meal was complete.

When we got home, it was time for cake:

Russell and Emily made me this very good Ice Cream Cake.  It was so good.  The best was hearing Emily and Colby sing "Happy birthday to Momma!" really loud.  The next day we had some more cake and they wanted to sing Happy Birthday to me again.

I had a great birthday this year despite the fact that I am getting older and one more year closer to thirty.  Boo!  But who knows maybe 28 will be a good age!
