The next day (Aug 18) while Nephi went to work and Penny had errands to do, we took a drive into Etna, CA, one of Russell's mission areas. Russell had fun driving around the town and trying to remember where everyone lived. We stopped at one member's house where the ward mission leader lived when he was there. We waited in the car while Russell talked to them. He said that they didn't really recognize him at first after 10 years but then they did. He decided not to knock on any more doors because if they didn't recognize him after 10 years, he was sure no one else would either. Oh well. We headed to the Etna Park for lunch and playing:
Emily was getting brave by letting Russell let go of her as she slid down the pole. After eating lunch and playing for awhile we headed to the local drug store for ice cream cones and then on to Yreka, CA to see that area of Russell's mission. On our way out of Etna Russell wanted a picture but these statues because he had one taken there on his mission. (I wish we could have found that picture to compare.)
Here is Russell's old mission apartment while he served in Yreka, CA. I told him it looked a little ghetto and he told me it was ghetto.
Blackberry bushes grow wild everywhere in Northern California and Oregon so on the way back to Horse Creek and the Hartshorn's, we stopped to pick berries:
We picked so many berries we filled Emily's bucket. MaryAnn (Nephi's mom) wanted to make blackberry pies but hadn't had a chance to pick any berries yet. We gave her most of the berries but saved some for us for a fruit salad for dinner. They were so good. I wish I could have taken some home to make jam but I don't think they would have lasted that long.
It was fun to see the areas that Russell served his mission in.
