Our time in Glacier was over but our vacation was not. After leaving Glacier we traveled west to our next destination of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. This is a city in the Idaho Panhandle near the Washington border. The reason we decided to go there was because not far from Coeur d'Alene is the famous bike trail called the Trail of the Hiawatha. This has been a bucket list item for our family so we had to take advantage of our proximity to the trail and extend our vacation to include it.
The drive from Glacier to Coeur d'Alene was quite long... It took us pretty much all day. The worst part was the air conditioning in the truck was still broken so we just had hot air blowing on us the whole time. We rolled down the windows but that didn't really do much and was really loud. We traveled through Montana to the border of Idaho and stayed at a little town called St. Regis, MT. We camped at the Campground St. Regis. It was actually a really nice RV Park. After setting up our camp, and getting things situated, we were all pretty hot and tired. The pool was calling our names so we all got changed and jumped into the pool. It felt great to cool off and get wet. We took up the whole little pool but we didn't care.
The next morning, we took a drive into Coeur d'Alene to see what was there. We drove around the city trying to find something to do and see the sites. We decided Coeur d'Alene is just a big tourist town which we kind of already knew. The best thing to do, we figured, would be to play in the lake. We parked at McEuen Park and walked down to the waterfront. Little did we know that all of the beach areas are privately owned and not accessible. Because of this we had to do a little hike around the lake near Tubbs Hill to find a good spot to swim. As we were walking, we found the famous Coeur d'Alene moose statues.
Finally we found a good beach area. It was kind of small and crowded but the water was nice and shallow enough for Brooklyn and Charlotte. Everyone had a good time swimming and relaxing in the water. We only had an hour to play though because we only paid for two hours in our timed parking spot. That was enough though. Charlotte and Brooklyn stopped to play in the splash pad on the way back to the car which they thought was better than the lake.
Before driving back to the campsite, we decided to drive about 20 more to the west and drive into Washington State. We have never been to Washington so it was cool to see the "Welcome to Washington" state sign. I couldn't get a picture of it though because it was really small and we drove passed it too fast. Oh well we were there.
Back at St. Regis, we stopped at the huge gas station/truck stop and went in to check it out. Inside was a big aquarium filled with trout.
This was similar to the tanks at Cabela's and we like watching the fish swim around. The gas station was also a huge gift shop with everything you could imagine in there. We looked around for a while then got some huckleberry ice cream to go. Back at the campsite we just relaxed in the shade and made a plan for the next day when we would hit the Hiawatha Trail.
This was a travelling day. We drove in three different states today. We trekked from Montana, through Idaho and into Washington! I wasn't too impressed with Coeur d'Alene but it was worth seeing once. Tomorrow will be the real adventure.
