April 21 was the annual Dixie Escalante Kite Festival. Emily, Colby, and I had a great time at the festival but boy was it hot! This was really the first day of summer for me. We even got our first sun tan of the year! We got to the Festival at around noon and we walked in and out of the vendor booths getting free stuff like balloons and pinwheels. The kids favorite things were the twisted and shaped balloons. Emily got a flower and Colby got a dog shaped balloon. Unfortunately, the heat and grass got to them and the moment we stopped to eat our picnic the balloons popped. Luckily though, we still had our helium balloons.
After eating our lunch, it was time to fly our kite! Emily picked out a Cinderella kite in her favorite color, pink. She loves anything princess. The kite flew really well as long as Emily was running with it.
Here is Emily running with her kite trying to keep it up in the air. Too bad there wasn't a lot of wind. One thing Emily didn't quite understand was that she had to run in a straight line for the kite to fly well. She kept running in circles so the kite kept crashing every time she turned. Oh well it was fun.
Then it was time for the real reason we came to the Kite Festival: Emily's First Dance Performance!
Here Emily is with her dance teacher, Miss Brittany, and all of her dance friends getting ready to go on stage. Emily loves going to dance every Monday. She is learning ballet and tap dancing in her little class.
And here she is dancing on stage for the first time! For this performance, they did a cute tap dance. The dance was so fun to watch. I didn't get any pictures of the actual dance because I was video recording it instead. The girls were so cute and they didn't really know their dance they just followed their teacher's moves as she demonstrated it to them off stage. It was so cool though. Emily wanted to be front and center so she seemed to jump the highest and stomp the loudest. She did such a good job. Emily's favorite tap move is to shoo-shoo backward and they do it twice in this dance. Emily loves going to dance class and being with her friends. Her next performance is the big dance company recital in June. This performance will be themed "Under the Big Top" and Emily's class is going to be popcorn! I am excited to see how it all turns out.
After Emily's awesome performance, I rewarded her with her very own snow cone while Colby and I shared. What a great treat for a hot day. Colby LOVED it and was mad when it was gone. By the time we got to the car Colby was asleep. After a long hot day, Emily also fell asleep on the way home. (I was wishing I could do the same!)
When Russell got home from school, we went out and flew Emily's kite again in our street.
Russell got the kite to work much better this time and it actually stayed in the air longer thanks to a little more wind. I had forgotten how much fun flying kites is. We will have to do it more often now.
