November 29 was the first Public Safety Fair in St. George. This Fair was a time for the people in the community to get to know the individuals in the public safety fields in the city. Some police officers, Medics from Dixie Ambulance, and of course the firefighters were there. Russell had fun participating with the fire guys and we went to watch him.
First the mayor spoke and said he wanted to make this Fair an annual occurrence because he felt is was important to recognize these people who risk their lives each day to make the rest of us safer. Then the fire Chief Stoker and the police chief spoke. Finally the main sponsor, the owner of Dealer Collision, spoke and he did a really nice job telling us what a good job these guys do. He then said his company and Stephen Wade were donating a school bus to the city so that the firefighters could be trained and certified in bus extraction and rescue. This will make it so that our fire guys are the only ones certified in bus extraction between Salt Lake and Las Vegas. That is an awesome donation.
During the Fair, the Firefighters did a little demonstration (and actually training) on how they extract people from a car after a bad wreck.
We were able to see them step by step open the car up with the Jaws of Life and see exactly what they do. Russell is in these pictures somewhere, they all kind of look the same in their turn outs. Russell said it was a really awesome training.
While they were finishing up the car, I took the kids around to the other exhibits. First we saw the police officers stuff. Emily and Colby got to climb inside of the actual police car. Colby even wanted to buckle up in it. Then we climbed inside of the SGPD Swat vehicle. This vehicle is completely armed and bullet proof.
Then Emily and Colby got to ride on the police motorcycle. Ok they really only got a picture on it but they thought it was cool. This is one of the police sargents, Sargent Harding.
After we were done with the police stuff, we headed over to the firefighters. Emily had a blast holding onto the fire hose and spraying water with Captain Nelson. I think Capt Nelson was having as much fun as the kids were with the hose.
Finally we got a fun picture with Dad in his fire turnouts and firetruck. We love doing stuff with the fire station. The guys are so friendly and fun to be around. The Public Safety fair was a lot of fun and the kids had a blast seeing all of the firetrucks, cop cars, and ambulances. It is funny to hear them get so excited every time they hear sirens around the town.
