Shriner's, Camping, and a Goober-mobile Equals One Long, Expensive Weekend!

So Pioneer Day/Weekend was pretty eventful for us this year. Here is the story:

First, July 21, we were walking into church and Russell stopped to hold the door open for Grandma Morwood while I had the kids follow me into the foyer.  Next thing I know, I look back and the door and I see Grandma trip on the outside rug and fall straight down hitting her hip on the door frame.  Russell was holding Logan so he couldn't react fast enough to try and catch her.  I felt so bad and we were so worried that she had broken her hip again.  Russell was able to get her up and walk her inside so we knew she hadn't broken anything luckily.  Grandma was pretty shaken up obviously and was feeling really dizzy so Russell had one our missionaries help him take her out to her car and Russell took her home.  She was pretty upset saying stuff like "I can't even go to church anymore!"  But by the time she had rested, she was feeling less dizzy and upset.  Come to find out she just bruised her hip and sprained her foot in the fall.  We are little worried and I think Grandma is too because this is her third fall in the year or so.

Then, July 23, Russell is in the shower listening to his pager and he hears his grandma Farnsworth's address come across as a 17 Delta.  This means a fall victim get there now!  (What is with our Grandma's and falling!) He yells at me to get the kids in the car.  Logan and I were taking our afternoon nap at the time so I was half asleep when he yells at me and Emily and Colby were playing somewhere.  So Russell rushes into the front room grabbing kids and shoes and I am still waking up wondering what the heck was going on.  Finally Russell tells me Grandma Farnsworth had fallen and there was a lot of blood and we needed to leave now so that we could go get her.  So we rushed to the car and Russell was on the phone with dispatch and the fire fighters telling them how to get in the house and calling Traci to tell her to get to Gramdma's right now.  Finally we all calmed down and drove to the ER where we met Russell's parents and Kathleen and Robert.  After getting Grandma Farnsworth cleaned up, the doctors did a few tests and MRI and found a small head bleed.  They were just going to observe her overnight but for various reasons, the doctor decided it would be best if they LifeFlighted her to IMC in Murray where a specialist could observe her recovery.  So we were all worried but we knew she would be in good hands because Jen and Wendy were up there to meet her.  After observing her for a couple days, she was able to go home on Saturday the 27th.

So after leaving the ER, we went home and got everything ready to go camping the next day.  The next morning (24th), we hooked on to the trailer and drove to Washington to see the Warrior Parade.  This parade was awesome and we even got to meet an apostle.  After the parade, we made our way up to Fish Lake.  This year we camped on the Gooseberry side of Fish Lake at Cold Springs.  This was an awesome camp spot and one I hope we can get to again.  We dropped off the trailer and visited with Terral for a while before loading back into the truck to continue our trip up to Salt Lake.  We arrived at Jen and Rick's place just in time to see the city's fireworks from their balcony.  We spent the night at their house.

The next morning (25th), we took Colby to his doctor's appointment at Shriner's Hospital.  Emily stayed and played with her cousins.  This hospital was awesome!  We held pagers in the waiting room that buzzed when it was our turn to go back!  There were also fun things for the kids to do because it is a children's hospital.  First we took a picture with The Chipmunks: Alvin, Simon, and Theodore:

Then Colby watched all of the colorful fish in the tanks.  They even gave Colby a new toy car and he was won over.  When it was our turn to go back, everyone was so friendly.  Dr. Hensey examined Colby's feet and the way he walked and then sent us over to get x-rays.  Colby was having fun being a silly 2 year old the whole time.  I couldn't stop laughing at him.  Once she got the x-rays, the Doctor was able to tell us what was going on with Colby's feet.  She told us he has oblique talus, which is a bit worse that flat footed.  The heel bone on his feet are horizontal rather than tilted up to form an arch.  This is causing the talus bone next to it to be completely out of place too.  In order to fix this, the doctor suggested a surgery that would require Colby to be in full leg casts for 6 weeks.  But even then, it seemed like there was no guarantee that it would fix it.  So we got the file of the x-rays and they told us we could decide what we want to do about this condition.  Dr. Hensey gave us a few things to look up to get a better idea about what this condition is like and what can be done to fix it.  We have an appointment with a doctor down here, too, for a second opinion.  After that, hopefully we will be able to decide what to do.

After Colby's appointment at Shriner's, we drove back to Jen's place to pick up Emily.  Then we drove to IMC in Murray to see how Grandma Farnsworth was doing.  Her head bleed was doing much better and the doctors were planning on releasing her on that Saturday.  That was great news and we were glad she was doing much better.

We decided we better get back on the road if we were going to make it back to camp before it got dark so we could make dinner.  On the way down, we had to stop at our traditional place in Orem, Krispy Kreme!  As we got off the freeway, and drove up to Krispy Kreme, we noticed a car we liked at one of the car dealerships.  We decided to take a look at it just for fun.  We stopped at Ken Garff Nissan in Orem and looked at a Trailblazer they had on their lot.  It had a ton of miles so we decided it wasn't for us.  As we turned to get back in the truck, we noticed a black Honda Odyssey van and decided to check it out too.  It was really nice on the outside and the miles were really low for the age of the car so we decided to ask the salesman how much it was.  Come to find out it was right in our price range!  We have been looking for a van or SUV or crossover ever since we had Logan.  It has been hard getting car seats in and out of the truck and we were just putting too many miles on the truck and with gas prices it was killing us.  So we decided to take this van for a test drive and we were sold!  Long story short, our little Krispy Kreme detour turned into buying a new vehicle!  Pretty expensive doughnuts huh!

Needless to say, we didn't get back to camp until around midnight or 1 am!  We were tired but restless because we now had a car payment...  We have not had a car payment for probably 5 years!  Oh well the next morning (26th) we didn't worry about anything we just had a good time camping.  We spent the day together as a family four-wheeling, fishing and hiking.  We first went fishing at Cold Springs. We didn't catch anything but it was soooooo nice to just sit in the shade and relax and enjoy the scenery.  I told Russell that if we didn't have to work, it would be so nice to just live in the mountains and be mountain men!  I could definitely do without technology for the rest of my life and just enjoy nature!  (that is I guess until the winter and it snows!) Anyway, after fishing, we took a little four-wheeler ride along the little trails around our camp.  Yes, all five of us can fit on our 4-wheeler!  Logan loved riding, he liked looking around at the trees and sunshine.  And of course Emily and Colby had a blast too!  We stopped at Twin Ponds and took a little hike to the ponds.

The kids loved running down the trail enjoying the beautiful surroundings.  They pointed out every flower, rock, bug, and stick along the trail.  Emily even found a HUGE dandelion to blow!  (I don't really think it was a dandelion, but that is what it looked like!)

After hiking for a while, the kids got tired and wanted a ride:

We finally made it to the pond.  Don't you just love all of the green everywhere!  I think this place is so beautiful.  Like I said before, if I could I would live in the mountains all summer.  So after enjoying this place, we headed back up the trail to the 4-wheeler and then back to camp.  That night, we had a campfire with the Hughes and the Pryor's and cooked Woofers.  Woofer cookers are roasting sticks with a wooden ball at the end of it.  To make a Woofer, you spread a Pillsbury biscuit over the ball and cook the biscuit over the fire.  Once the biscuit is cooked, you take it off the ball and fill it with pudding or pie filling and whipped cream and you have a little pie or a Woofer!  They were so good.  We also cooked S'mores and had a good time around the fire.

We had to cut our camping trip a little short because we needed to go back up to Orem to pick up our new van.  We left camp around 8 in the morning and as we were getting in the truck, I noticed this big beehive a few feet away from our trailer:
I kept wondering why we had so many bees in our camp and I guess I found out why.  The beehive was pretty cool to look at though.

So this is where our vacation gets pretty ridiculous.  We bought our van on Thursday and we told the dealer that we would be back on Saturday morning to pick it up so they had all day Friday to get everything ready for us to drive it home.  When we bought the car, they agreed to detail the inside, fix a couple of plastic panels under the car, get a spare key, and a couple other things.  Well when we got to the dealership Saturday morning, none of those things had been done.  They had not even gotten it safety inspected or the temporary tags ready!  We were so mad we were about to say never mind on the car.  We had to be on the road by noon because I had to be home to go to a baptism at 5 so we were trying to push them along to get all of this stuff done.  I still don't know what the hold up was on Friday and why it took so long on Saturday.  Another very long story short, we were very upset with the service we received at Ken Garff, I missed the baptism (luckily my counselor was able to go and take charge), and they didn't even put gas in our new car!  Grrrr!  But on the plus side, we really like our new van and the kids love the new van and tell everyone they see about it:

Ain't she a beauty?!  We call her Black Pearly.  When we finally got on the road, I got to drive Black Pearly home while Russell drove the truck and trailer.  We asked the kids where they wanted to ride and they all said, "In the new van!!"  Pearly drove so nicely and smoothly down the freeway and got pretty good gas mileage about 25 mpg!  We drove in good weather until we got to Fillmore then the rain started coming down.  And I mean coming down!  It rained in sheets and sheets.  We drove with the windshield wipers going super fast and we still had a hard time seeing more than just the car in front of us.  We drove about 50 mph the whole way.  Finally the pouring rain finally let up as we got the about Toquerville.  Then after that, it was bright and sunny like it hadn't rained at all!  So weird.  (See the sunny skies in the pictures above)  So I guess in a way, having the car delayed was a blessing in disguise.  If we would have gotten the van on time and left at noon like we had planned, we would have been in a hurry to get home for the baptism.  But since we didn't have to hurry home to anything, we were able to slow down and drive safely in the rain.  I guess there is always a positive way to look at things and Heavenly Father has His hand in everything whether we want to see it or not.  We were very blessed to get this van and it seemed everything fell into place to get it on Thursday.  It is so nice to get kids in and out of.  So now we are the drivers of a goober mobile!  Our coolness level just went down a few notches because we now drive a mini-van!!!! (sfx: woman screaming!).  Good thing we like it and hey it even has leather seats, heated seats (not that we need it in St. George), a back up camera, and huge trunk space.  (Love the trunk space!!)

This weekend was quite long and quite expensive but quite exciting and spontaneous too.
